Many options in state for entertaining your kids this summer

With the Fourth of July already in the rear view mirror, and the summer in full swing, you may be looking for ways to keep your kids occupied and content without having to drive four hours to Cape Cod or making travel reservations. Along with taking in a minor league baseball game, or visiting a Connecticut beach on a hot New England day, there are a number of options for fun family outings in Connecticut.

For a free, relaxing afternoon, you might pay a visit to Northwest Park in Windsor, which offers hiking trails, a few farm animals and a small playground for children to enjoy. Also, don’t forget to contact your local library for the availability of free or reduced rate passes to some of Connecticut’s tourist attractions.

Another good resource for finding things to do with your family is CTvisit.com. The Web site, which is run by the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, offers a variety of options for leisure time in our state. The site offers a break down of places to travel to by region: Litchfield Hills, River Valley, Mystic County, Greater New Haven, and Fairfield County.     You may also order the 2007 Connecticut Vacation Guide online.

While by no means all-inclusive, the Web site does include some suggestions for places to go in our area. In Suffield, the Phelps-Hatheway House located on Route 75 offers a glimpse of an architectural masterpiece that is more than 210 years old. The New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks is place every child will enjoy. Located in Windsor Locks (adjacent to Bradley International Airport), the museum offers 80 aircraft housed in three buildings, along with other exhibits and a gift shop.

Another favorite place to visit for many kids is the Old New-Gate Prison and Copper Mine in East Granby. This National Historic Landmark was the site of one of New England’s first copper mines, and was later used as a state prison from 1773-1827.

Among the many other places to visit in Connecticut mentioned at CTvisit.com are: Stafford Motor Speedway (Stafford Springs); Dinosaur State Park (Rocky Hill); Mark Twain House and Museum (Hartford); Old State House (Hartford); Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art (Hartford); Gillette Castle (East Haddam); The Essex Steam Train & Riverboat (Essex); Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration (Mystic); Lake Compounce Theme Park (Bristol); and the Peabody Museum of Natural History (New Haven).

The Web site also features links that can help you plan an itinerary, current and special events listings and an online coloring book for kids. If you do not have access to the Internet and would like some information regarding things to do in Connecticut this summer, call 1-888-CTvisit, or contact my office at 240-8700.
