Rep. Fahrbach bill signing for legislation which will allow for special designation of Lower Farmington River and Salmon Brook

State Rep. Ruth Fahrbach (R-Windsor) today attended a bill-signing ceremony with other area legislators and Governor M. Jodi Rell at the Governor’s Capitol office. The new law will work to preserve the Lower Farmington River and Salmon Brook as open space under the federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.

“This legislation is an important step that will help to preserve and protect the natural beauty of the Farmington River and its watershed for generations to come,” said Rep. Fahrbach.

The Lower Farmington River and Salmon Brook run through the towns of Avon, Bloomfield, Burlington, Canton, East Granby, Farmington, Granby, Hartland, Simsbury and Windsor. The area provides a variety of activities including paddling, hiking at Tunxis State Forest and picnicking at Granbrook Park. Salmon Brook is also well known among anglers for its brook trout.

The legislation calls for the Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection to work with federal, state and local agencies to attain a federal Wild and Scenic Rivers designation.

The legislation takes effect October 1, 2008.

State Rep. Ruth Fahrbach represents the 61st District, including Suffield, and parts of Windsor and East Granby, in the General Assembly.
