REP. FREY URGES CONSUMERS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WEATHERPROOFING TAX BREAKS |

HARTFORD – State Rep. John H. Frey, R-Ridgefield, today reminded residents of tax breaks available on home weatherization products. Various energy efficient home heating and weatherization products are exempt from the state sales tax from now until June 30, 2007.
Rep. Frey voted in favor of legislation that initially established the program in October 2005, as well as legislation to extend it earlier this year. Taking advantage of the tax savings will not only save Ridgefielders money on their initial purchase but the items that help meet energy efficiency standards will, in turn, help reduce heating bills, said Rep. Frey.
Items exempt from the sales tax include: programmable thermostats; window film; insulation; water heater blankets; natural gas furnaces that meet the federal Energy Star standard; propane furnaces that meet the federal Energy Star standard; and windows that meet the federal Energy Star standard.
“We are likely looking at another expensive heating season,’’ said Rep. Frey, who serves as an Assistant Minority Leader. “These tax breaks are an excellent incentive for anyone considering making such home improvements this winter.’’
A complete list of exempt items and an explanation of the initiative is available on the state Department of Revenue Services Web site at http://www.ct.gov/DRS .
