REPRESENTATIVE FREY RECEIVES LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS

HARTFORD—State House Republican Leader-elect Lawrence Cafero, R-Norwalk has appointed State Representative John H. Frey, R-Ridgefield, to several of the General Assembly’s legislative committees for the 2007-2008 session. Rep. Frey was elected to his fifth term on November 7 and subsequently appointed as a House Republican Whip.

Rep. Frey will serve on the Legislature’s Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee, Insurance and Real Estate Committee and Banks Committee. The Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee has cognizance over all matters relating to finance, revenue, capital bonding, fees and taxation. The committee also has cognizance over employer contributions for unemployment compensation and all matters relating to the Department of Revenue Services and the revenue aspects of the Division of Special Revenue.

“Despite a projected state budget surplus of nearly half a billion dollars, there will likely be numerous proposals to hike taxes brought before the Finance Committee, such as the “millionaire’s tax,” said Rep. Frey. “I’m hopeful that instead, the committee can move forward with initiatives to bring some well-deserved tax relief to both the state’s business community and our families.”

The Banks Committee has cognizance of all matters relating to banks, savings banks, bank and trust companies, savings and loan associations, credit unions, the supervision of the sale of securities, fraternal benefit societies and all legislation dealing with secured and unsecured lending. The Insurance and Real Estate Committee has cognizance over of all matters relating to insurance law and real estate law.

“The Insurance Committee may well see some legislation related to the universal health care proposals that are expected to be introduced next year,” said Rep. Frey, who has served on the committee since he joined the General Assembly in January 1999. “There traditionally has been legislation before the committee each year to expand benefits in health insurance policies. The subsequent challenge is to achieve solutions that provide quality health care for our citizens without driving insurance providers from Connecticut.”

During his tenure in the General Assembly, Rep. Frey has served also on the Government Administration and Elections Committee, Commerce Committee and Labor and Public Employees Committee, including two years in which he served as its Ranking Member (House Republican Leader).

The 2007 General Assembly session begins January 3.
