Reps Hamzy, Burns: House Approves Bobroske Reappointment to State Board of Education

Legislators Urge Her Confirmation in Remarks on State House Floor

The state House of Representatives Wednesday voted unanimously to reappoint Beverly Bobroske of Bristol to another term on the state Board of Education, state representatives William A. Hamzy, R-78th District, and Ron Burns, R-77th District, said today.

Both legislators spoke in favor of Mrs. Bobroske’s reappointment on the floor of the House.

“In addition to being my guidance counselor when I was a student at the Harry S. Fisher School in Plymouth, Beverly Bobroske has been a friend and a mentor for many years,” Representative Hamzy said. “She was one of the most effective members of the state Board of Education during her first term. As a recognized leader in the field of education, she will continue to serve the children of our state with distinction as she embarks on her second term.”

“From the classroom to the board room, there is no one I’d trust more with the education of our children than Beverly Bobroske,” Representative Burns said. “With her background and experience in education as both an education professional and a former member and chair of the Bristol Board of Education, she understands the challenges facing Connecticut’s public schools.”

Mrs. Bobroske, who was originally nominated to the state Board of Education in 2005 by Governor M. Jodi Rell, was a member of the Bristol Board of Education from 1983 through 2003, where she served as secretary, vice chairman and chairman. Mrs. Bobroske was employed as a 5th Grade teacher and guidance counselor for grades 6, 7 and 8 at the Harry S. Fisher School in Plymouth for many years. She also has served on the Connecticut Advisory Council for Administrator Professional Standards under three governors, Representative Hamzy said.

The state Board of Education is responsible for general supervision and control of the educational interests of the state, including preschool, elementary and secondary education, special education, vocational education, and adult education. The board also provides leadership and promotes the improvement of education in the state, including research, planning and evaluation and services relating to the provision and use of educational technology by school districts.

In addition, it prepares courses of study and publishes curriculum guides, including recommendations for textbooks, materials, instructional technological resources and other teaching aids it determines are necessary to assist school districts in carrying out duties prescribed by law.

The board also submits reports on the condition of the public schools and the quality of instruction they provide to the governor and the state legislature’s education committee.
