BONDING BATTLING

By State Representative John J. Ryan

We have only a few lines this month to opine and hope that you are continuing to follow up on the bonding imbroglio currently the major issue in State government. We left off in last week’s column that Governor Rell intends to veto the bonding package recently passed on a party-line vote as an excessive amount of spending and debt. She called a Special Session hoping we would vote on the school construction part of the bonding bill (meaning the undisputed portion) to at least get that accomplished, and the Session was almost immediately adjourned.

The Governor’s next effort was to call a meeting of all the legislative leaders to attempt a compromise, and Speaker Amann refused to attend, because (God forbid!) Governor Rell had invited the Republican leaders to attend! In brief, the legislative ‘Supermajority’ position seems to be for the Governor to A] sign the bonding bill or B] let’s have a veto override vote.

Stay tuned. Read the quotes in the daily media for yourself! You may have noted that I am of the naïve viewpoint that how your government spends the millions and millions of your tax $$ should be an important topic for you!
